The
Village
Loutra was an important religious and cultural center of the island. The baths that existed in the area gave the name to the village. The Monastery of the Jesuit Monks was built here in the 19th century, with the temple dedicated to the founder of the order, Ag. Ignatius Loyola. On the site of the Jesuit Monastery, the folklore museum of Loutra operates.
They are widely known for the Ursuline Monastery founded in 1862. The imposing building housed the girls’ school and later the village primary school, as well as a carpet making school. It can be visited and has the museum of the Ursuline Monastery with objects that were saved from the period of its operation as a school. In the summer, cultural events are organized in the courtyard of the Ursuline Monastery.
The Church of Saint Joseph dates from the middle of the 19th century. Surrendered to the ravages of time, it retains the charm of the neoclassical baroque. It is built in a green ravine, with almond trees, fig vines and palm trees surrounding the settlement. You can visit Venetian buildings, churches and marble springs and of course go for swimming and eating at the most famous beach of the island, Kolympithra, which is located at a distance of 5.5 km.
